Wines of Campania

If everything Italy gets you excited, welcome to the wonderful wines of Campania!! Campania is one of Italy’s oldest wine regions, dating back to the 12th century BC. Ancient empires, including the Byzantines, the Greeks, and the Romans all made their mark on wine production. The terroir of this southern Italian region is varied and complex, with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and Mount Vesuvius to the east. With an abundance of sunshine, dry hot summers, mild winters, and a long growing season, both red and white grapes grow well here. The red grape to know is Aglianico, sometimes called the “Barolo of the South,” for its power and majesty. Wines such as Aglianico del Taburno and Taurasi are expressions of Aglianico at its best. With notes of black cherry, cured meat, white pepper, and leather, this is a wine that can age. If whites are your fancy, remember Fiano, Greco, and Falanghina. Fiano, a grape with a 2,000 year history, has a rich mouthfeel and is quite aromatic, while Greco, named for the Greeks, is less vibrant on the nose but has complex flavors and textures. Falanghina boasts notes of citrus blossom and ripe apples, and was raved about by the ancient philosopher Pliny the Elder. You don’t have to travel all the way to Naples to appreciate these Italian delights. Just come into Vintage soon as we are pouring both a Taurasi and a Greco di Tufo! Saluti!
